PROJECT: Easter at the Open Door

DATE: Apr 23, 2011

I've been thinking for a while now that I'd like to do a version of the Open Door Community's logo as a linocut. (It seems to fit the aesthetic and gives a nod to Fritz Eichenberg and Ade Bethune as well).

I was talking to Eduard about the symbolism in the graphic and he explained the dual nature of the doors: a prison door opening to set the prisoner free, and the door of a home opened to receive the homeless guest. The rounded top also struck me as somehow invoking the empty tomb and the concept of resurrection (dead things being made alive again), so I thought Easter would be the perfect time to make this image.

My daughter worked on it with me from time to time and really enjoyed the printing process. We didn't really have the right paper for this so all of the prints have at least some small imperfection, but that fact contains a kind of symbolism in itself.
